Well the answer is they took better care of themselves and didn't depend on health insurance to control their lives. Fact is, the doctors actually made house calls in some cases where the patient was too sick to come into the office. This, of course, was before DRG's (diagnostic related groups) and before a lot of pressure was on doctors to produce more revenue. Throughput they call it. Lawsuits, years ago, were not to the extent they are today. Rising insurance premiums are the result. Many years ago a lot of doctors practiced medicine the way Naturopathic Medical Doctors do today. The belief that good food plus exercise went a long way in keeping people healthy. By practicing this concept, now going by the popular term alternative medicine, most people were able to avoid using insurance except in cases that called for more stringent medical procedures. If the people today practiced more healthy eating and exercise the high insurance costs could be reduced and most important of all, you will feel better. But you have to force yourself to do that. How will this happen? Actually you see the beginning of it now. With insurance costs rising almost monthly, the option is ultimatley coming down to people switching their insurance plans to HSA's. HSA's are insurance plans that basically only cover major medical claims. A high deductible, meaning the insured pays all claims to a certain figure, forces the insured to think twice before running to the doctor for minor ailments that can be solved by themselves. Will this work? Eventually it will because the insured will take better care of themselves and eat/exercise properly. A lot depends on you. If you don't start now it maybe too late later.
